Constitution
Vision
The Greens (WA) uphold and work toward a global society characterised by:
a) ecological sustainability;
b) social and economic equity;
c) grassroots, participatory democracy;
d) peace, nonviolence and disarmament.
Principles
This societal transformation can be achieved through attention to the following principles:
a) INTER-RELATEDNESS
The destiny of all of life and humankind is dependent upon a global awareness of the
interrelatedness of all ecological, social and economic processes.
b) GLOBAL BALANCE
There exists an urgent need to work collectively to restore balance between human society and
the earth’s environment, and to fundamentally re-evaluate our relationship with other life forms
and the place of human societies in the natural order.
c) SUSTAINABILITY
The earth and its resources are held in trust by us for future generations. We, therefore, have an
ethical responsibility to ensure the sustainability of natural systems and to develop sustainable
social, economic and industrial systems.
d) DIVERSITY
Biological and social diversity fosters and strengthens the development of co-operative
communities at all levels from the planetary to the cellular scales.
e) INDIGENOUS RIGHTS
Indigenous peoples, such as the Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, have
customary rights of sovereignty over traditional land and water, and to self-determination.
f) CONSERVATION IMPERATIVE
Environmental conservation will result in enhanced environmental quality, improved
satisfaction of basic needs, greater efficiency of resource use, and generally more stable
communities.
g) EQUITY
All people have the right to an equal opportunity to participate in, and to benefit from, the
development of the world's resources, and share equal responsibility for maintaining and
protecting its environment.
h) SOCIETAL STRUCTURES
Peaceful, open and democratic societies can be developed through structures which foster
participation, empowerment, a sense of belonging, co-operation and nonviolent resolution of
conflict.
i) HUMAN RIGHTS
Social justice and human freedom in public and private life are attained through equality of
rights and opportunity for all people, irrespective of age, gender, race, class or nationality. The
elimination of poverty, and access to housing, education, childcare, healthcare, and diverse
cultural activities are all part of social justice.
j) SELF RELIANCE
Self reliant community structures which are responsive to local needs and democratic styles of
decision making, organisation and management, are achieved through bioregionalism,
multiculturalism, decentralisation of economic activity, and promotion of human scale
enterprises using appropriate, sustainable technologies.
k) APPROPRIATE DEVELOPMENT
Appropriate economic and industrial development policies give a high priority to regional
economic and cultural independence, socially useful and environmentally responsible
investment, social accountability for the use of productive resources, democracy in the
workplace, and the right of all to stable, safe and satisfying work.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of The Greens (WA) are:
a) to promote, foster, secure and sustain the vision and principles;
b) to seek the election to public office of people who are committed to The Greens (WA) vision
and principles;
c) to promote, coordinate and assist other associations, whether corporate or un-incorporated
and individuals, in working for The Greens (WA)’s vision and principles;
d) to participate in the development of the Green political movement at national and global
levels;
e) to achieve these objectives by means which are appropriate and consistent with our vision and
principles.
