The Greens (WA) have warned that extended Sunday trading would damage communities.
"Western Australia should be proud to be different if it means we are not bullied into extended Sunday trading," Greens Economics spokesperson Dee Margetts said today.
"We have better things to do on a Sunday in WA than buy toasters."
"Extended Sunday trading would take shop-workers away from their partners and children on the one day they have left to share. Workers offered a day in lieu when they are forced to work on Sundays would have that day off on a school day," said Ms Margetts.
"Extended Sunday trading would hurt volunteerism in Western Australia and have a massive impact of community groups and sporting organisations," she added.
"Extended trading will lead to less, not more choice, for Western Australians as smaller retailers are driven out of business and the big chains take over."
Ms Margetts said WA should continue to be different.
"I don't think it is an insult to Western Australians to be told we are different to the rest of Australia - I think it is a compliment. It shows we have an independence of spirit and are not so easily fooled by false promises from big business."
