South West Greens MLC Paul Llewellyn has continued to support the community's
initiative to bring their grievances about the activities of the Augusta Margaret River
Shire Council to the attention of Parliament, and has urged the Shire to respond in a
positive way.
"It is well known that Margaret River has had issues with their local Government and their
planning procedures for years. Quite frankly, I am surprised that it took so long for this
issue to get the attention of the Parliament," Mr Llewellyn said.
"I have been speaking to concerned citizens in Margaret River for several years and was
increasingly aware of their concerns, and that is why I wrote letters and asked questions in
Parliament. It is my job to support citizens to be heard through these means, and through
petitions to Parliament on matters of public interest.
"This petition is clearly the last resort of a frustrated community of people who do not feel
that their grievances have been heard or addressed."
Paul Llewellyn noted that as part of its normal procedure, the Environment and Public
Affairs Committee of the Legislative Council is considering the petition and will report
on it.
"The Augusta Margaret River Shire is entitled to make a submission in writing to the
Committee addressing both the concerns raised in the petition and issues about the Draft
District Town Planning Scheme that have been raised by my questions in Parliament."
"It would be a healthy move for democracy for the Shire Augusta Margaret River to turn a
listening ear to all its community members so that the Shire can be protected and
developed in a balanced and sustainable way. It would also be healthy to acknowledge
past difficulties so that the community can move on in a positive way."
