The budget was a step in the right direction towards solving our
housing crisis, but we still have a long way to go, according to Senator Rachel Siewert.
"The Rudd Government has set down a good foundation by addressing some
of the long term problems associated with the current housing crisis. I
was pleased to see the necessary changes made to the Government's
contribution to the First Home Savers accounts, addressing the
inequality issues that previously existed."
"Being part of the Select Senate Committee into Housing Affordability,
I've seen evidence of the true extent and impact the housing crisis is
having on households across Australia. The Australian Greens would have
liked to have seen measures directed to addressing some of the immediate
problems facing those struggling against huge debt or high rents."
"We need the Government to take an active role in supporting not only
those finding it difficult to buy a house but those who cannot even
afford to rent," she said.
"We look forward to the Government implementing further measures to ease
Australia's housing crisis, including further development in rental
assistance, shared equity, housing co-operatives and further funding of
low-cost housing."
"While this budget clearly acknowledges the dire situation affecting
many Australian households, the Government still needs a comprehensive,
in-depth approach that tackles all levels of this problem. We must deal
with the underlying structural issues of housing affordability in this
country" she concluded.
