Greens (WA) Members of Parliament
The Greens (WA) has had parliamentary representation since its formation in 1990. Jo Vallentine was the first Greens Member of Federal Parliament in Australia. Jo was elected to the Federal Senate in 1984 as a member of the Nuclear Disarmanent Party. In 1990 Jo became the first Greens member of the Senate following the merger of the Green Earth Alliance with the W.A Green Party.
Following Jo's retirement from Parliament in 1992, Christabel Chamerette was elected by the Greens (WA) to take her place. In 1993 Christabel was joined by Dee Margetts, who was elected that year in an half Senate election, and Jim Scott who was elected to the upper house of the Western Australian Parliament. Unfortunately the Greens (WA) lost Federal representation with the defeat of Christabel in 1996 and of Dee in 1998.
Despite the loss of Christabel in 1996, that year was marked by success in electing two members to the upper house of State Parliament, Giz Watson and Chrissy Sharp and re-electing Jim Scott.
In the 2001 State Election Giz, Jim and Chrissie were joined by Robin Chapple and former Senator Dee Margetts.
The Greens (WA) regained a seat in the Senate in 2004 with Rachel Siewert. The State election in 2005 saw lower Greens (WA) representation in parliament and a new face in Paul Llewellyn taking over from Dr Chrissy Sharp in the South West. The Greens (WA) are in a strong position to make a difference to West Australian politics.
In the federal election in 2007 Scott Ludlam was elected to take his place with Rachel Siewert in the Senate.
