Policies of The Greens (WA)
The Greens (WA) believe in a future based on
- Social Justice
- A fair, equitable and humane society is not founded on greed and acquisition, but on justice for all members of society.
- Participatory Democracy
- Our current political systems are not truly democratic. Only a system that allows the full participation of all people can be called a true democracy.
- Peace and Nonviolence
- Current methods of conflict resolution only bring further conflict. We believe in nonviolent methods that have disarmament as the central basis.
- Economic and Ecological Sustainability
- Our current system of economics and environmental management is fundamentally flawed. Only sustainable policies will ensure the survival of the planet.
Backing these beliefs, The Greens (WA) have a wide range of detailed policies that would support real changes to the structure and nature of Australian society.
The Greens (WA) detailed polices are under review in the lead up to the 2008/9 State Election under the following headings. As policies are developed and ratified they will be added to the site or replace earlier versions on the same topic
Climate Change
Climate change is the result of a reckless disregard for our planet's finite resources, which are unjustly distributed between rich and poor nations and people through unsustainable economic, development and security models. It is already having an enormous impact on our planet.
This group of Greens (WA) policies aim to achieve a transition in Western Australia, within a generation, to an efficient, low carbon economy powered predominantly by renewable energy. The policies would also avoid any involvement in the nuclear fuel chain that ends in nuclear waste or nuclear weapons.
Caring for People
The Greens (WA) believe that everyone is entitled to equal access to opportunity, justice and democracy in a sustainable society. We also recognize collective and individual responsibilities to each other, community and the environment.
Our policies address the fundamental needs of all, and encourage the inclusion of all people in every aspect of Western Australian society.
Open and Honest Government
The Greens (WA) believe in open and honest government, in which all citizens are heard and evidence-based decisions are made in the public interest. Greens policies in this area would introduce a comprehensive set of reforms to promote good government, including new approaches to regulation of lobbyists, campaign finance, political parties, access to information and review of government activities.
Protecting the Earth
The natural environment has intrinsic values, with limits to the amount we can take from it. We have a duty of care to our unique natural environment. Our forests, oceans, freshwater and soils are currently not being managed sustainably. Western Australia also has a very poor record of preserving biological diversity and our precious ecosystems. Human society depends upon the ecological resources of the planet. There is now an urgent need to restore balance between human society and the Earth's environment.
Sustainable Regions
In less than two centuries we have populated, cleared, mined and built our cities and towns destroying the ecological balance and putting at risk our future prosperity in the region. While mining and clearing underpinned our prosperity for the first two centuries of occupation; our streams first turned salty and are now running dry, the land is struggling to yield with low rainfall. The regions which provide our food, shelter, timber, water and energy are under stress and depleted.

Sustainable Cities & Towns
This broad category gathers together Greens policies relating to our urban areas, particularly the Perth metropolitan area. With a rapidly growing population of more than one and a half million people, our city has breached key thresholds of water consumption, energy demand, traffic volumes, land clearing, housing affordability and air pollution. Social disadvantage is being entrenched in poverty postcodes with fewer services, higher pollution loads and high vulnerability to increasing oil prices.
Water
Since mid-2007 the Water Corporation and the Dept of Water have recognised the drying climate trend is intensifying. It is possible that river flows into Perth's dams may be negligible before long and that a drastic reduction of groundwater consumption must follow.
The Greens (WA) proposes a public engagement process to address all these issues and their implications.
