Sexuality and Gender Identity
Discrimination on the grounds of sexuality or gender identity is unacceptable. The Greens (WA) are committed to working towards and protecting equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people (LGBTI).
Goals
The Greens (WA) want:
- the repeal of all federal and state laws that are discriminatory
- to maintain the equal age of consent for heterosexual and homosexual activity
- same-sex marriages and de facto relationships to have identical legal status to heterosexual relationships, including equal entitlement to superannuation and insurance.
Initiatives
The Greens (WA) promote and support government and community actions that:
- promote community education programs that will lead to a greater understanding of sexual diversity
- oppose any criminal sanctions which denies an adult the right to engage in sexual activity with another consenting adult in private
- provide focused information, services and support networks for LGBTI young people
- change the curriculum in schools to include age appropriate discussion of sexuality and non-condemnatory treatment of LGBTI lifestyles, relationships, sexualities, histories and cultures in all primary, secondary and tertiary institutions
- encourage the promotion of positive community attitudes towards LGBTI people
- recognise LGBTI relationships in immigration, on the same basis as heterosexual relationships, and recognise that the persecution of LGBTI people overseas is a cause for granting residence on humanitarian grounds
- recognise that sexuality should not be a factor in adoption, fostering, child custody rulings or access to artificial insemination, sperm donation and in vitro fertilisation programs
- encourage the funding of specialised health, welfare, accommodation and counselling services for LGBTI people
- improve and broaden the police and prison services' knowledge of and sensitivity towards LGBTI issues and further develop liaison between these services and LGBTI communities
- enable people to live according to their self-identified gender
- establish intersex as a legally recognised sex that can be chosen by people with intersex conditions.
